POSITION PAPER TIPS

 Hi delegates!


Just wanted to check in and offer a bit more guidance on your position papers.


As a reminder, UNEP will be using standard Position Paper format detailed in the Topic Research page on the BMUN website.


Besides the general format, we wanted to offer some tips on the research process and the formation of your paper. 


Research


The biggest favor you can do for yourself in the writing process is to really apply time and effort into understanding the topics beforehand. Luckily, your DAIS has written to key to beginning this process: your synopsis! Not only do we recommend reading this synopsis, but we hope that you will interact with it. Ask questions, make connections, and reflect on what you learned. Familiarizing yourself with the synopsis is the key to a smooth research experience. 


After reading the synopsis, don’t stop there! This piece is just a stepping stone for the research we hope you will complete. Maybe read some additional case studies, look at some current events relating to your topic… ultimately, the sign of a well-researched paper is taking the information within the synopsis a step further.


Our advice: don’t simply reiterate the synopsis, interact with it. Your position papers should be composed of information learned both within and outside the scope of the information we have given you.

Writing


After researching, you should have a good sense of what you want to include in your paper. We suggest making an outline of this important information first, then adding commentary on why these points are important. A sign of a great position paper is one that not only contains substantiate information but elaborates on it and provides clear and effective commentary. 


Be sure to leave yourself enough time to write and revise (don’t hesitate to ask for help or an extension if needed)... and please make sure to properly cite your sources.

A reminder that Position Papers are due on Feb. 4th to be considered for the Research Award, and Feb. 11th to be considered for any committee award. Again, we’d be happy to grant an extension if necessary!

VICE CHAIR INTRODUCTION - SAMEER AMEEN

Hello! My name is Sameer Ameen and I'm one of your vice-chairs. I'm a second-year intending to do a simultaneous degree in Society & Environment and Rhetoric. I founded the MUN club at my school in the middle of the pandemic and am very excited to be a part of BMUN and its community. I was born in Los Angeles to two immigrant parents from Bangladesh and have traveled to many countries around the world, witnessing firsthand the different cultures and political spheres discussed in MUN conferences. Outside of BMUN, I spend most of my time listening to music, going to the gym, hanging out with friends, and finding good food here in the Bay area.  UNEP is a special committee because it discusses the most prevalent issue in our global community today. The health of the environment decides the fate of our only habitable planet. I am excited to hear all the solutions you come up with!

 Hi guys! My name is Sora Kanosue and I will be your senior vice chair for BMUN 71's United Nations Environmental Programme. I am a senior here at UC Berkeley majoring in Computer Science, with a minor in Mathematics, and also serve as BMUN's Treasurer. Outside of BMUN, I conduct research on programming languages, and specifically on building data processing tools for less experience programmers. I'm also an avid tennis player and a member of BMUN's intramural volleyball team. I look forward to seeing everyone at BMUN 71!
